普段私たちがネット上で目にするものは、アルゴリズムによる選別と、そこから生じるトレンド、バズ、フィードバックといった複数の要因によって形成されています。SNSでは「目立つもの」や「即座に理解されるもの」が優先的に提示され、そのように繰り返し表示される情報は、あたかも重要であるかのように感じられるものです。
私の代表作「Portrait of Dazzle」は2021年に発表した作品ですが、当時はコロナ禍でギャラリーに鑑賞者を招くことが困難だったこともあり、SNS等のネット上で作品を見てもらうということも、重要な作品鑑賞の方法となっていました。そのような環境において私は、「目立つこと」や「即座に理解されること」を一つの重要な条件として制作しており、それは当時の状況において、作品を見てもらうための現実的な判断だと考えていました。
私の作品では、「インターネットやSNSの普及が現代人の心理や生活に与えた影響」を主なテーマの一つとしていますが、本展はそれを外側から観察するだけでなく、制作を行う私自身への影響をも、過去の作品制作を通じて問い直す試みでもあります。通常、作品制作時のアイデアの採用・不採用は、「視覚的要素」「コンセプト強度」「制作実現性」などが主な基準ではありますが、特にコロナ禍に制作・発表した「Portrait of Dazzle」では、作品の生産性や制作コスト、SNSの反応、マーケティング上の判断など、作品の本質的価値とは直接関係のない複数の要因が、アイデアの採否に影響を与えています。
個展タイトルのAlgorithmic Discretionとは、「人間に代わって、アルゴリズムが何を見せ、何を優先し、何を除外するかを決める」という意味の言葉です。価値が数値や瞬間的な反応と同じ基準で測られる現代において、本質的価値とは何なのか。本展は、『アルゴリズム』というテーマを、自身の制作プロセスを通して表現した実験的な展示です。私自身の内省的な側面も大きいため、鑑賞者の皆様におかれましては、単純に「新しいPortrait of Dazzle」としてお楽しみ頂ければ幸いです。
What we usually encounter online is shaped by multiple factors, including algorithmic selection, as well as the trends, virality, and feedback that emerge from it. On social media, content that is “eye-catching” or “instantly understandable” is prioritized, and information that is repeatedly presented in this way begins to feel as though it holds greater importance.
My signature work, Portrait of Dazzle, was first presented in 2021. At the time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was difficult to invite audiences into galleries, and viewing artworks through the internet—especially via social media—became an essential mode of experiencing art. Within this context, I approached my practice with an emphasis on “visibility” and “immediate readability” as key conditions. I considered this a practical decision in order for the work to be seen under those circumstances.
One of the central themes of my work is the impact of the internet and social media on contemporary psychology and daily life. However, this exhibition does not simply observe these influences from an external perspective; it also serves as an attempt to re-examine their effect on my own artistic process through a reflection on past works. Typically, decisions regarding which ideas to adopt or discard in the creative process are based on factors such as visual elements, conceptual strength, and feasibility of production. However, particularly in Portrait of Dazzle created and presented during the pandemic, various external factors—such as productivity, production costs, social media reactions, and marketing considerations—have influenced these decisions, despite not being directly related to the intrinsic value of the work.
The exhibition title Algorithmic Discretion refers to the idea that algorithms, rather than humans, determine what is shown, prioritized, or excluded. In a contemporary society where value is often measured alongside numerical metrics and instantaneous reactions, this exhibition questions what constitutes intrinsic value. It is an experimental presentation that explores the theme of “algorithm” through my own creative process. As it also reflects a strong introspective dimension of my practice, I hope that visitors will feel free to simply enjoy the works as a new iteration of Portrait of Dazzle.
